What fiber internet is, and why it matters

The technology that carries your internet as light down a strand of glass, and how it differs from the coax cable that has been there for forty years.

Fiber is a hair-thin strand of glass that carries your data as pulses of light. That is the whole idea. Everything people like about fiber follows from that one physical fact.

Why light beats electricity

Cable and DSL send your data as electrical signals down copper. Copper resists. The signal weakens with distance, it picks up interference from every motor and power line it passes, and the amount of data you can push through it is capped by physics well below what glass can do.

Light in glass does not have those problems. A single fiber can carry signals for tens of miles without a booster, it does not care about electrical noise, and the ceiling on how much data it can carry is so far above what households use that providers are selling 8 Gbps to homes on infrastructure they installed years ago.

The part that actually changes your day

Upload speed. This is the difference people feel and nobody advertises. Cable is asymmetrical by design: a 1,000 Mbps cable plan typically gives you 35 Mbps up. Fiber is symmetrical — 1,000 down means 1,000 up.

You notice this the moment you stop only consuming:

  • You are on a video call while someone else in the house is on one
  • You back up photos or a Time Machine drive to the cloud
  • You upload video, push code, or send large files for work
  • You run a security camera that streams to the cloud all day

Latency. Fiber runs 5–15 ms to the first hop. Cable runs 15–35 ms. Satellite runs 25–60 ms on Starlink and 600+ ms on the geostationary services. Latency is what makes a call feel natural instead of walkie-talkie, and it is what decides whether a competitive game is playable.

Stability under load. Cable is a shared medium — your street shares capacity, so speeds sag between 7pm and 11pm. Fiber gives each home a dedicated path back to the aggregation point.

How to know if what you are being sold is really fiber

Providers stretch the word. Three things to check:

  1. Is the upload equal to the download? If a "fiber" plan is 1,000 down and 35 up, it is cable. Fiber to the home is symmetrical.
  2. Does the installer talk about an ONT? Fiber terminates in an Optical Network Terminal — a box, usually white, mounted inside or on the side of the house. A cable modem is not an ONT.
  3. What is the plan actually called? "Fiber-powered", "fiber-backed" and "fiber-rich" all mean fiber runs to a cabinet somewhere in the neighborhood and copper covers the last stretch to your door. That last stretch is what determines your speed.

When fiber is not the answer

If fiber is not built on your street, it is not built, and no amount of asking changes that this month. Construction is expensive and providers build where the density pays. In that case:

  • Cable is the next best wired option, and for a household that mostly streams, the upload gap barely registers.
  • 5G home internet has become a genuine alternative — flat pricing, no install, and speeds that beat entry-level cable in many places.
  • Starlink is the answer where nothing is wired, with latency low enough for video calls.

The honest summary: fiber is better, but "better" is not the same as "necessary." A household of two that streams and browses is well served by a 300 Mbps cable plan.
